The ID-Traction scope, was developed in 30 months, to investigate and develop a Plug&Play technological solution for upgrading the power traction converter of high speed trains, validated within the Alfa-Pendular train fleet, with an optimized/reduced cost, deploying new power modules and its different interfaces with the train and keeping the actual traction control unit. This solution is based on the most actual power semiconductors, which will allow the final solution achievement with improved reliability and availability performance indicators. A second objective was to research and develop an instrumentation subsystem for monitoring the significant variables to health condition analysis of the power traction chain, namely traction modules and motors, and its integration in project solution.
The ID-Traction project was a response to an emerging need done by many international rail operators to optimize maintenance costs relating to the traction chain of their rolling stock, that are in the middle of its life cycle. In fact, many railway operators are faced with obsolescence of the GTO’s semiconductor (Gate Turn Off), resulting in high rates of failures, and its alternatives to maintenance/ replacement are very costly, both in terms of costs, both in terms of immobilization of the rolling stock, in addition there are more up-to-date technology with clear operating advantages, such as IGBTs semiconductors. To guarantee the project success, the consortium was formed by two multidisciplinary organizations: Nomad Tech and an institution that belongs to the Scientific and Technological System (Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto). These entities have skills and competences that do not overlap but complement each other, bringing together a team of competent professionals in different functional areas considered essential to achieve the proposed objectives and developments.
